I fought hard to ensure extension of the solar tax credit in the omnibus budget and tax measure passed by Congress at the close of last year, and I will continue to fight to ensure that clean energy sources like solar grow as a vital and valuable part of our country&#8217;s energy portfolio,&#8221; said U.S. Senator <span class=\"xn-person\">Richard Blumenthal<\/span> of <span class=\"xn-location\">Connecticut<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The project brings more than 7.5 megawatts of solar power generation capacity to the residential housing areas operated by Balfour Beatty Communities at five naval bases located in the northeast: <span class=\"xn-person\">Mitchell Field<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">East Meadow, NY<\/span>; Naval Submarine Base, <span class=\"xn-location\">New London, CT<\/span>; Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, <span class=\"xn-location\">Lakehurst, NJ<\/span>; Naval Support Activity, <span class=\"xn-location\">Saratoga Springs, NY<\/span>; and Naval Station, <span class=\"xn-location\">Newport<\/span>, RI.\u00a0 This effort builds on the 13.3 megawatts of rooftop solar that Balfour Beatty Communities and SolarCity partnered to develop across the Balfour Beatty Communities-managed housing at Fort Bliss in <span class=\"xn-location\">El Paso, Texas<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are committed to adding value to the communities we manage through sustainable programs like the rooftop solar effort with SolarCity,&#8221; said <span class=\"xn-person\">Chris Williams<\/span>, president of Balfour Beatty Communities. &#8220;We&#8217;re pleased to generate cost savings for this project while offering a clean energy source to our residents through these innovative solutions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>These installations are the first east coast projects of SolarStrong, SolarCity&#8217;s plan to build more than <span class=\"xn-money\">$1 billion<\/span> in solar projects to provide power to 120,000 military homes throughout <span class=\"xn-location\">the United States<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The SolarStrong initiative has meant new hiring for SolarCity\u2014with approximately two-dozen new staff brought on directly for the Navy Northeast projects and an additional 90 staff mobilized to speed completion. SolarCity emphasizes\u00a0veteran hiring across the company, and has hired military veterans in over 90 locations across <span class=\"xn-location\">the United States<\/span> in installation, recruiting, business development, sales and more.<\/p>\n<p>SolarCity provides clean energy. The company claims to have disrupted the century-old energy industry by providing renewable electricity directly to homeowners, businesses and government organizations for less than they spend on utility bills. Its mission is to give customers control of their energy costs to protect them from rising rates.
