Car Parks Of The Future? New European Airport Uses Trina Solar PV Modules

Trina Solar Limited, recently supplied the photovoltaic modules for a solar carport system with an installed capacity of 4 MWp at the German airport of Weeze. This outstanding project was managed by EEPro GmbH and offers roofed parking space for around 1,350 vehicles. The planning and construction phases were completed within four weeks each.

The international Airport Weeze in North Rhine-Westphalia is one of the newest European airports and one of the first private airports in Germany. It currently welcomes around 1.8 million passengers a year. The airport operators have now opened car park P2 for their customers and equipped it with a photovoltaic carport system. The P2 car park offers a double advantage: On one hand, the renewable energy generated by the solar system can be used by the airport as an additional source of income or for self-consumption, at the same time reducing its carbon footprint. On the other hand, the system also serves as a protective layer shielding passenger vehicles parked underneath against sun, rain or hail.

The 66 carports have a length of up to 35 metres and a width of up to 13 metres. In total, 15,296 pieces of multicrystalline solar modules from the Honey series (TSM-PC05A) made by Trina Solar were used with a total peak power of 4MW. The modules were delivered by Trina Solar during the short four-week construction phase in late July and early August 2016. The PV system approved by TÜV-Rheinland already feeds energy into the grid of regional distributor Westnetz.

Given the short construction phase, it was particularly important to have a smooth and reliable material flow, as emphasized by the project management of EEPro. “When selecting partners and products, we pay particular attention to state-of-the-art, high-quality technology, high-degree of reliability and investment security. Trina Solar stood out for us as the leading provider in all of these points,” said Jan Kiermaier, the Business Manager of EEPro. “We were particularly impressed by Trina Solar’s strong customer focus, effective assistance and support to face any challenges. Having a strong and reliable partner is often a crucial factor determining the success of a project.”

“We are very pleased about the fruitful cooperation with EEPro. Together, we have demonstrated once again how photovoltaic projects can be implemented quickly and efficiently when project knowledge, quality products, and experienced partners come together,” said Gonzalo de la Viña, Regional Sales Director at Trina Solar. “Weeze Airport now has the economic advantage of clean solar energy combined with the benefit of having a car park roof that protects the vehicles parked underneath.”

As an international project developer and general contractor, EEPro has been successfully involved in the field of free-standing photovoltaic systems and commercial rooftop systems since 2007. To deliver superior value to its customers and investors, EEPro relies on close cooperation with customers in highly professional teams consisting of expert electrical engineers and a management team with international project experience. Highly-skilled project managers, globally operating assembly partners with longstanding experience, an internal department for long-term plant support and advanced monitoring software to deliver the forecast investment yield complement its range of services.

Trina Solar Limited is a market leader in photovoltaic modules, solutions, and services. Founded in 1997 as a PV system integrator, it today drives smart energy together with installers, distributors, utilities and developers worldwide. The company states that its industry-leading position is based on innovation excellence, superior product quality, vertically integrated capabilities and environmental stewardship.
