Saudi Arabian project developer ACWA has been selected to develop a 200-megawatt solar power project in Dubai.
The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority had issued a tender for the project last year, and ACWA, together with its partner, Spanish engineering and technology company TSK, was selected to
sell power at levelized tariff of US$5.84 cents power kilowatt hour for a 25-year period starting in 2017.
The project, to be located at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, is part of the United Arab Emirate government’s plans to derive 1% of Dubai’s total energy production by 2020 from solar energy, and 5% by 2030.
The project, which occupies 4.5 square kilometres, will help to achieve a reduction of 250,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. This supports the green initiatives and programmes of the Dubai to reduce carbon emissions. This project will increase the size of solar energy projects in Dubai to 220MW.
