India’s carbon emissions rose 1.57% in 2013 to 15.63 million tonnes in 2013 from a year earlier, according to the government.

The figures were revealed by Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju Pusapati during a Parliament sitting. India is the third largest emitter of greenhouse gasses in the world. The country accounted for 17% of global growth in carbon emissions from 2012 to 2013.

The country has not committed to making any firm cuts in its carbon emissions, and wants the developed nations to start playing more proactive role in cutting emissions.
