NRG Renew Bags Contract t Supply Solar Power to Kaiser Permanente

NRG Renew has signed an agreement to sell up to 70 megawatts of solar capacity to healthcare provider Kaiser Permanente in California.

NRG Renew, a subsidiary of NRG Energy Inc., will implement a single-brand, multi-site distributed solar program at as many as 170 sites, which will include medical offices, hospitals, clinics, data centers and other Kaiser Permanente facilities.

It will install solar photovoltaic arrays integrated primarily on carports and parking structures, which will provide shade from the sun to more than 20,000 parking spots used by Kaiser Permanente members, visitors and employees. The planned aggregate coverage area will make the NRG Renew–Kaiser Permanente portfolio one of the world’s largest solar projects built primarily for vehicle parking.

Electricity generated by the solar installations will be sold to Kaiser Permanente under a long-term power purchase agreement, offsetting each facility’s use of grid power and increasing the total use of clean, emission-free electricity. The combined installations are expected to offset up to 8% of Kaiser Permanente’s load throughout the state.

Kaiser Permanente has a target to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2020.
