Saudi Arabian renewable energy developer, Acwa Power International, has acquired Sunrise Solar Energy Psc, a project company that is building a 50MW solar power plant in Jordan. This solar project will result in about 2.3 million tonnes of CO2 saved during its PPA term, which is roughly enough to power 15,000 homes.
Sunrise Solar System Jordan, a subsidiary of Greek developer SunRise Photovoltaic Systems, sold the project after winning the tender to construct it last May by bidding 0.043 Jordanian dinar (6 US cents or Dh0.22) a kWh.
The unit will be part of a 150-megawatt solar complex in the Mafraq development north-east of the capital city of Amman, Acwa said in a statement. It did not disclose the value of the transaction. Sunrise has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Jordan’s National Electric Power Company (NEPCO).
Thamer Al Sharhan, managing director of Acwa Power said: “Stepping into this project to realize this new benchmark tariff of 6.13 USD cents/kWh for PV energy in Jordan once again demonstrates Acwa Power’s commitment to cost leadership in power generation. This project, together with the recently launched Husain Thermal Repowering Project, also helps to increase economic activity in the country while simultaneously reducing the cost of producing electricity and lowering the carbon footprint of the generation portfolio of Jordan.”
Germany’s ET Solutions AG will be providing engineering, procurement and construction services and Jordan’s Central Electricity Generation Co and First National Co for Operation and Maintenance Services, a subsidiary of Acwa, will operate and maintain the plant.
Overall, the government of Jordan has awarded power purchase agreements for 12 solar energy projects, seeking to install 200 megawatts in total.
