Southern Power Buys Majority Stake in 32-MW Californian Solar Project

Southern Company subsidiary Southern Power has acquired a controlling stake in the 32-megawatt Lost Hills-Blackwell farm in California from First Solar Inc.

Financial details were not disclosed. First Solar will continue to hold a minority interest in the project, and will continue to operate and maintain it. The Lost Hills-Blackwell comprises two sites – the 20-MW Lost Hills and the 12-MW Blackwell projects– comprising a combined 308 acres of adjoining land in Kern County. The project consists of more than 454,000 of First Solar’s photovoltaic modules mounted on single-axis tracking tables.

Construction of the project began in April 2014 and is expected to be completed soon. Power will be sold to Pacific Gas and Electric Company and Roseville Electric. Southern Power will now own 990MW of renewable energy generating capacity that is in operation or under development.
