EDF Energies Nouvelles Starts Up 24.6-MW South African Wind Farm

EDF Energies Nouvelles has started operating the 24.6-megawatt Waainek wind farm in South Africa.

The project Eastern Cape province is 80% owned by its subsidiary InnoWind, with the rest held by local partners. It comprises eight sets of 3.075-MW turbines. The energy produced by the Waainek wind farm is purchased by the local grid operator under a 20-year power-purchase agreement.

InnoWind this year also commissioned the 61.5-MW Grassridge and the 21.5-MW Chaba projects, which like the Waainek wind farm, were awarded by the South African government in 2012.
