Abengoa and its partners are developing a 100-megawatt solar thermal power project in the town of Pofadder in Northern Cape Province in South Africa.
Abengoa owns 51% stake in the project with state-owned financier Industrial Development Corp. holding 29% and the KaXu Community Trust 20%. The project incorporates a storage system that can produce 100MW of electricity for 2.5 hours after sunset or before dawn.
The project was awarded to the developers by the Department of Energy of South Africa, and has a 20-year power purchase agreement signed with Eskom, South Africa’s power utility.
Abengoa is also developing the 50-MW Khi Solar One project using tower technology and started construction of the 100-MW Xina Solar One parabolic trough plant in the same region.
