AGL Starts Operating First 25-MW Phase of Solar Project

AGL Energy Ltd.’s Nyngan Solar Plant in western New South Wales has started to generate the first 25 megawatts of power that is being fed into the National Electricity Market.

The remaining phases of the 102-MW project will start operating over the next three months as the remaining three sections of the plant are individually commissioned. The project cost A$290 million (US$225 million). First Solar installed the 340,000 photovoltaic panels that are part of the first phase.

The Nyngan solar plant will produce enough renewable electricity annually to supply more than 33,000 homes. AGL is constructing the Nyngan Solar Plant and the 53-MW Broken Hill Solar Plant with A$166.7 million funding support from the government’s Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and A$64.9 million from the New South Wales state government. Both plants will be constructed by First Solar.
