Greenleaf Power Acquires 37.5-MSW Biomass Project in Connecticut

Renewable energy project developer Greenleaf Power has inked an agreement to a 37.5-megwatt biomass power plant in Connecticut from Leidos Inc.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. Greenleaf Power expects to close on the transaction later this year. The Plainfield Renewable Energy plant is capable of providing baseload renewable energy for as many as 280,000 homes.  It use wood that is mainly derived from construction and demolition waste as feedstock

The US$200 million project started operating in December 2013, and sells its electrical output to Connecticut Light and Power under a long-term offtake agreement.

“The acquisition of Plainfield Renewable Energy will mark Greenleaf Power’s sixth acquisition in North America and second on the east coast,” said Hugh Smith, president of Greenleaf Power.  “Plainfield solidifies Greenleaf Power’s presence throughout North America as the leading owner-operator of biomass power facilities.”

Greenleaf Power, whose existing facilities are located in California and Canada, invests  in and develops projects that gather biomass that would otherwise be openly burned or landfilled, and converts it to renewable energy.
