Apex Clean Energy has signed an agreement to sell its 299-megawatt Kay Wind farm in Oklahoma to Southern Power, which will now be the owner of its first wind-power facility.
The deal is expected to close in late 2015 upon successful completion of the project. Financial details were not disclosed. The wind farm is being built and will be operated and maintained by Apex Clean Energy. Blattner Energy Inc. is the engineering, procurement and construction contractor. The plant is expected to start commercial operation in the fourth quarter of 2015.
Siemens will provide the 130 wind turbines to be used by the project. The electricity and associated renewable energy credits generated by the facility will be sold under 20-year power purchase agreements with Westar Energy Inc. in Kansas and Grand River Dam Authority in Oklahoma.
Southern Power, a unit of Southern Company, owns 970MW of renewable energy projects that are either already in operation or under development, including the Kay wind farm. The company owns seven solar projects jointly with Turner Renewable Energy and one solar project in partnership with First Solar.
