NextEra Energy And TVA Commission 75MW Solar Energy Project. Largest In Alabama

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and NextEra Energy Resources have joined local leaders to celebrate the commissioning of Alabama’s largest solar energy project. The River Bend Solar Energy Center features more than 300,000 solar panels with trackers that follow the sun from east to west each day to maximise energy production. Together, they generate 75MW, or enough to power more than 15,000 homes. The energy will serve TVA consumers starting this year, under a 20-year power purchase agreement.

French Giant Total To Install PV Solar Panels In 5,000 Service Stations Globally

Total is launching a program to equip 5,000 of its service stations worldwide with solar panels within five years, including 800 in France. The total solar capacity to be installed is about 200 MW, equivalent to the amount of electricity used to power a city of 200,000 people. The project represents an investment of around $300 million and is projected to cut the company’s carbon emissions by 100,000 tonnes annually and reduce energy costs by $40m each year. It’s a high-profile move in what it sees as a growth sector, highlighting a greater industry focus on renewables.

NREL Scientists Discover How Bacterium Uses CO2 And Cellulose To Make Biofuels

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) made the surprise discovery that a metabolic pathway to take up CO2 exists and functions in a microorganism capable of breaking down and fermenting cellulosic biomass to produce biofuels including hydrogen and hydrocarbons. “Our findings pave the way for future engineering of the bacterium as a way to improve carbon efficiency and to reduce the amount of CO2 released into the environment,” said Katherine Chou, staff scientist at the NREL.

Canadian Solar Supplies 18,500 Panels For Large US Agricultural Installations

Canadian Solar has announced that it has supplied 5.74 MW of its MaxPower CS6X310P modules to two projects located in Fowler, California. The first installation; the 2.49 MW Bee Sweet Citrus Farm, consists of 8,034 panels. The second installation; the 3.25 MW National Raisin Company Farm, consists of approximately 10,509 panels, making this array one of the largest agricultural solar systems in the USA. In total, the cumulative amount of electricity produced from these two installations is equivalent to powering 564 homes for one year.

Nordex Wins 111MW Wind Turbines Order For Projects In Turkey

The Nordex Group is strengthening its position in Turkey: the manufacturer recently received 3 new orders from its customer, Eksim Yatirim. Nordex is to install a total of 37 N117/3000 wind turbines for Eksim. The wind market in Turkey has expanded greatly in the past 10 years, from 150MW to more than 5GW in installed capacity. Since entering the market in 2007 Nordex has installed a good 1.3GW in Turkey, making it the market leader according to the latest report by the Turkish Wind Energy Association.

The international Airport Weeze in North Rhine-Westphalia is one of the newest European airports, welcoming 1.8m passengers a year. The airport operators have now opened car park P2 for customers and equipped it with a PV carport system. This offers a dual advantage. First, the renewable energy generated by the system can be used as an additional revenue source, or for self-consumption; whilst reducing its carbon footprint. Dominion Acquires 60MW Solar Farm And Announces Multiple Solar Electric PPAs

As part of its long-term plan to bring online at least 500MW of solar electric generating capacity in North Carolina (N.C.) and Virginia, Dominion has announced it has acquired the development rights for the 60MW (AC) Summit Farms Solar facility in Currituck County, N.C. The solar facility is expected to enter service in December 2016. It has also signed 25-year power purchase agreements with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston Medical Center and Post Office Square Redevelopment Corporation.

Electric Mobility Can Enable Competitive Advantage For Local Authorities

A series of workshops for local authorities to promote e-mobility is being organised by the German state agency e-mobil BW and the local authorities’ association of Baden-Württemberg. The workshops are designed to indicate practical options for local authorities to get into electric mobility. The possible entry points include replacing conventional vehicle fleets with electric vehicles, establishing a needs-driven charging infrastructure, and electrifying the local public transport system with electric buses, electric taxis and schemes that make available local authority-owned electric vehicles for car sharing.
