US Electricity Generation – Renewables Level With Nuclear; Solar Growth Surges

The latest issue of the U.S. Energy Information’s (EIA) “Electric Power Monthly” reveals that renewable energy sources are level with nuclear power, in regards to their respective shares of the nation’s electricity generation, with each providing roughly 20% of the total. While renewables and nuclear are each likely to continue to provide roughly one-fifth of the nation’s electricity generation in the near-term, the trend line clearly favors a rapidly expanding market share by renewables compared to a stagnating, if not declining, one for nuclear power.

Paradigm Shift For Fueling Transportation? Innogy Presents Alternative To Oil

The energy revolution is now also picking up speed in transportation. In the “Green Capital of Europe-Essen 2017”, MS innogy was christened and put into operation as a regular passenger vessel. It’s powered by an environmentally friendly methanol fuel cell. The energy required for the whole operation comes entirely from renewables. Peter Terium, CEO, innogy SE said – “with MS innogy we are enabling people to experience the energy revolution directly; show in a very practical way what a clean energy future without oil could look like. We can do this by producing green fuels such as methanol with renewable energy and using them to drive environmentally friendly ships, aircraft and heavy goods transport”

French Giant ENGIE Develops 55 MW Wind Farm; First Mongolian Renewable Project

ENGIE has announced that it will build and operate the Sainshand wind farm in Mongolia, its first renewable project in the country, located in the Gobi desert. This project, which is the third privately financed wind farm in Mongolia, will support the government’s objective to evolve towards a greener economy and a better environment. A US$120m project financing package has recently been signed by a group of international investors and financial institutions to develop the project. The wind farm will have a total installed capacity of 55 MW and will provide the equivalent of the electricity consumption of 130,000 people in Mongolia.

Siemens Gamesa Installs Asia’s Tallest Turbines, Whilst Stepping Up Integration

Siemens Gamesa has set a new record in Asia by installing this year the tallest wind turbines on the continent. The turbines are equipped with 153-metre tall towers, and with the 56-metre blades, they reach a total height of 210 metres. Presently, a major focus for the company is the integration of the entities of Siemens and Gamesa. This has the objective of realising the new company’s substantial potential, thanks to its bigger scale and global reach: a presence in more than 90 countries, an installed base of 75 GW, and an order book of €21bn.

Offshore Wind Drives 6.1 GW Of European Wind Installations In First Half Of 2017

6.1 GW of extra wind energy capacity was installed in Europe in the first half of 2017, according to figures released by WindEurope. The figure puts Europe on course for a bumper year for installations, although hides some worrying trends. WindEurope Chief Policy Officer, Pierre Tardieu, said: “We are on track for a good year in wind capacity installations but growth is driven by a handful of markets. At least ten EU countries have yet to install a single MW so far this year. Although this won’t translate into lower installations for another few years, the industry needs clarity on volumes for the post-2020 period to maintain the current cost reduction trend”.

EV Revolution To Hit Global Auto Industry Even Harder And Faster Than Expected

Electric vehicles will make up the majority of new car sales worldwide by 2040, and account for 33% of all the light-duty vehicles on the road, according to new research published by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF). Tumbling battery prices mean that EVs will not just have lower lifetime costs, but will also be cheaper to buy than internal combustion engine cars (ICE) in most countries by 2025-29. Colin McKerracher, lead advanced transport analyst, BNEF, said: “We see a momentous inflexion point for the global auto industry in the second half of the 2020s.
