India Urged To Accelerate Carbon Emissions Reduction

India has been urged by the United Nations to adopt a more robust carbon emissions target to play a leading role in sustainability, energy efficiency and fight against climate change.

“India is in a unique position to lead sustainability, energy efficiency and fight against climate change,” UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit in India. “India has a young population and it is a great opportunity.”

India is under pressure to increase the pace of emission reductions after the United State and China agreed in November to cut carbon emissions. President Barack Obama said the U.S. will cut its net greenhouse gas emissions by 26-28% below 2005 levels by 2025, whilst China said its carbon dioxide emissions would peak around 2030, with the intention is to peak even earlier.

China also plans to increase the amount of energy generated from renewable energy sources to around 20 per cent by 2030.
