DEWA plans to build 97 new 132/11 kilovolt (kV) substations over the next three years, at a projected cost of AED 10 billion, supporting the directives of its leadership and showing DEWA’s commitment to meeting growing demand for energy in Dubai. The new substations will be located at Hassyan, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, and other locations to support the expansion of other power plants in Jebel Ali and Al Aweer.

Manufacturing Of Printable Solar Panels Made Possible By Perovskite Breakthrough

A University of Toronto innovation could make printing solar cells as easy and inexpensive as printing a newspaper. Post-doctoral researcher Hairen Tan of U of T’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering and his team have cleared a critical manufacturing hurdle in the development of a relatively new class of solar devices called perovskite solar cells. This alternative solar technology could lead to low-cost, printable solar panels capable of turning nearly any surface into a power generator.
University Professor Ted Sargent, an expert in emerging solar technologies and the Canada Research Chair in Nanotechnology said, “Perovskite solar cells can enable us to use techniques already established in the printing industry to produce solar cells at very low cost.

Japan’s Jera Accelerates Growth Of India’s ReNew Power With $200m Investment

JERA Co., a joint venture between two of Japan’s largest utility companies, Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. and Chubu Electric Power Co has invested $200m in ReNew Power, one of India’s largest clean energy companies, as its first investment in the Indian energy sector, where significant economic growth has brought increased demand for electricity. In addition, the Indian government has set a target of introducing 100 GW of solar and 60 GW of wind power generation by 2022. The acquisition of a 10 percent stake values ReNew Power at $2 bn.

Adani Commissions India’s Largest Solar Power Plant In Record Time Of 150 Days

India’s leading integrated infrastructure conglomerate, the Adani Group has commissioned the country’s largest solar power plant in Kutch district, Gujarat. The current capacity of the plant is 40MW, with plans to expand this to 100 MW. It’s India’s largest solar power plant, and commissioned for a record time of 150 days – from foundation stone laying to electricity generation. The plant has over 400,000 solar PV modules mounted on 21,600 structures, which are erected on 130,000 foundations. The project was awarded under Gujarat Solar Power Policy of 2009.

BNEF – Overall Clean Energy Investment Slows, Yet Wind Surges To Record Levels

New investment in clean energy worldwide fell 18% last year to $287.5bn, despite a record year for offshore wind, according to latest figures from Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Chinese slowdown and falling costs of solar power were two of the reasons. However, even though overall investment in clean energy was down in 2016, the total capacity installed was not. Estimates from BNEF’s analysis teams are that a record 70GW of solar were added last year, up from 56GW in 2015, plus 56.5GW of wind, down from 63GW but the second-highest figure ever.

Chile Marches On: Santiago Solar Awards Elecnor $117m Solar PV Plant Contract

Elecnor is to strengthen its Solar PV position in Chile. It has won the USD 117.2 million (equivalent to approximately EUR 110.8 million) contract to build a solar PV plant in Chile. The facility, with a capacity of 115 MWp, will be in the municipality of Til Til, to the north of Santiago, in the Metropolitan Region. The contract was awarded by Santiago Solar, whose shareholders are Andes Mining & Energy and EDF Energies Nouvelles, and encompasses the engineering, supply, assembly and start-up of the plant and the high-voltage evacuation infrastructure via a GIS substation connected with a high-voltage line. The project will be financed by a syndicate of banks headed by Crédit Agricole in New York.
